About Kerry Phippen
Kerry Phippen was born in Perthshire and has lived in the Stroud Valleys since 2000. Her work is inspired by the people and animals she observes in her life, with a lot of imagination thrown in. Moments of everyday life become little pockets of observed stillness and her sketches made on walks are later developed into expressive ink paintings, acrylics and oils, each infused with a distinctive sense of narrative and place.
Regular visits North to Scotland continue to inform her artistic vision, combining a sense of part-remembered places from childhood along with the intrigue of discovering new locations to explore. The Scottish Highlands and islands, including Shetland, Mull, Skye and Tiree hold a particular fascination, offering wild landscapes and quiet encounters to feed her imagination. She loves to spot ponies and seals and otters and any other wildlife which happens to show up. Kerry works directly from life, carrying a small sketchbook to record observations and fleeting moments in the landscape.
A graduate of Bath Spa University, Kerry’s work has been exhibited in major National galleries, including the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Jerwood Drawing Prize and the Royal West of England Academy. Her ink drawing Ghoul School is held in the permanent collection of the British Museum.
